Alkmaar has so much more to offer than just the small canals visible during the canal cruise! Just outside the city center lie the vast polders and Lake Alkmaar. Enjoy a delightful cruise along the North Holland Canal (NHC), among others, where it is immediately striking how the ship sails high above the meadows. A unique and typically Dutch sight!
During this cruise, you will enjoy the beautiful Dutch skies, the expansive landscape of the Schermer and the North Holland lakes, while enjoying (locally produced) drinks and snacks on the sun deck.
In collaboration with historians and guides, we have compiled a unique story specifically for this cruise in 2025 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the NHC. You will learn, among other things, how and why the NHC was dug, where the famous Alkmaar surname ‘Modderman’ (Mud Man) comes from and we will sail past the site where the very first globally known strike took place. Our enthusiastic skipper will tell you all about this and many more special events and places during this 2-hour canal cruise towards and across the Alkmaardermeer. You are, by the way, very welcome to come and take a look at the skipper and have a chat. Our deckhand and hostess are on deck to pamper you so that you can sit back and relax during this mini-cruise.
This cruise is also very suitable for children. We have coloring books and traditional Dutch games on board such as Ludo, Snakes and Ladders, Tin Can Throwing, etc. And, if you ask the skipper nicely, you might even get to steer the 120-ton, 25-meter-long ship yourself for a moment on the Alkmaardermeer!
To make the boat trip complete, there is the option to sample authentic Alkmaar specialties. During the cruise, you will receive an explanation regarding the origins, history, and flavors:
- The Alkmaar ‘victory pastry’ from the best Alkmaar patisserie: the Victorientje. Includes a cup of fresh coffee or tea.
- The one and only Alkmaar cheese board: Made by Alkmaar residents with passion and a centuries-old recipe. A symbol of Alkmaar’s rich cheese history. Combined with real Alkmaar Moersleutel beer or a delicious glass of wine of your choice.
- Not necessarily Alkmaar, but definitely typically Dutch: classic ‘bitterballen’ and luxury olives & nuts. These can be ordered on board.
